Student magazine contents page

This was my final contents page for the student magazine. when i did this i had never really experienced programmes such as photo shop,or publisher so did not have very good techniques or skills, so when i tackled my final contents page for my music magazine i made such i improved on this. however i did like the layout of my contents page and this was reflected when u compare the two pages together as they follow a similar layout.
Student magazine final frount cover

This is my final front cover for my student magazine, from uploading this it is clear to see the improvements i have made and my progression towards completing my final music magazine. As you can see the front cover of this is not very professional and looks very messy and not well thought out, i took all this into consideration when making my music magazine front cover.

Final article

After looking over what i thought was my final article i decided to make a few improvements, i realised that i had to much free space still left and that my columns weren't accurately lined up so i altered all of these and just doing that improved the over all look, i then added in different text for some parts of the article to make it look less plain. After doing all this i added in some bold yellow text boxes were i could the competition and useful information text in so that it stood out more to the audience, i think this was a good improvement and was very successful. i also used word art to make a bold title for the competition section, i thought i should do this because it would be the first thing the readers eyes would be drawn to. so this is my final article and my final evaluation PowerPoint will be uploaded shortly.

Most recent edited magazine article

This is my most recent final draft of my magazine article, as you can see since last time i have added in a few more photographs and then imported my text i firstly drafted onto word. My text is an interview with DJ.Petty so to make this more obvious and stand out more, i used two tone text so the black stands for the question being asked where as the orange stands for the answer being received, i thought this look very effective and made the page look more colourful and interesting, there are still a few bits and pieces i need to re-arrange but this is the basic final edition layout.

Magazine article

This is my first draft layout for my music magazine article, i have chosen to do this on a A3 size paper layout, and have inserted text boxes and picture boxes to were i think my text should go, this is only a rough guide and will properly be changed around over the course. I have then inserted my pictures i will use for the article. i have placed these but there not definite positions. i have also added a background effect of silver so this makes the page more effective.

Analysis of Kerrang front cover

This is the music magazine front cover from a Karrang issue; just from first glance of the front cover you can tell there will be lots of band information and pictures ECT.
The main target audience for Kerrang magazine are teenagers 15-19 year old. People who are interested in rock/punk/grunge/indie music tend to be the main audience and buyers of this magazine, you could get this impression because if you look towards the bottom there are a list of bands all linked to the punk rock scene. As well as this the main central image gives out a very incisive theme. The central image is a man being tattooed by a woman, this can associate the fact that most punk rockers have tattoos to symbolise there interests and emotions, this picture is very dramatic so would stand out compared to any other magazine helping to draw people . Unlike other music magazines such as pop, or girl magazines the picture does not have that welcoming factor, then again this could be a connotation of Karrang because the music and lyrics found within the genre are not happy, catchy and welcoming, they hold a lot of emotion and hurt, so people that buy this magazine can normally relate to it.
The person in the picture is Matt Heafy who is a member of the rock band TRIVIUM. He is on the cover because it shows what the main article will be about, so when readers first pick up the magazine, they are drawn to buy it, it appeals to the magazine’s target audience as well.
There is text under the main picture that says: “Under the skin of Matt Heafy TRIVIUM”… this can be a play on words associated with the picture because he is being tattooed so there under the skin, this can be use as catchy text to also help draw the reader in.
I would say this magazine would be more for the people who have “alternative lifestyles” e.g. Goths, punks etc. because of the contents of the magazine, it gives articles on bands which are representing the audience, it also gives concert gigs, dates and locations, it also has a wide variety of photographs possible taken at previous concerts, so there is a wide variety for the readers. The design of the block title tells me that the magazine is quite edgy but organised. This is because the title looks like it has been smashed, possibly related to when rock stars smash there guitars on the floor at the end of gigs The title is a main part of the front cover because it is so bold its one of the first things the reader will see and read do they need to give an edge to it. From the title “Kerrang” you can tell that the magazine is linked to music because the word Kerrang sounds like a connotation of the sound that is made when someone strums on the guitar, this would also link to the audience because the guitar is one of the main instruments found in the rock/punk music.
On the front there are pop out vibrant shapes that hold information containing free gifts or competitions. This also helps to promote the magazine because people think there getting something added onto the magazine.
The magazine has a slogan …..LIFE IS LOUD. This will become a brand that people will associated with the magazine and will be recognized, again another tactic of selling the product
The colours used through out the magazine are quite dark and gloomy, there is a lot of black, which can definitely be associated and be a stereotype of Goths and punks.
The fonts used are quite plain and not to complex, there bold and stand out which is a good link because the music associated with this magazine stands out from all other music.
my Front cover sketch

this was my original sketch that i used to base my final front cover on. this was not my original sketch thought because i was not happy with the lay out of it, through using this sketch i found it a lot easier and quicker to create my front cover on photo shop because i could use it to no were each of the photos was going and the layout of the text.

Changes to my front cover along the way
Starting my editing for my front cover

After taking my photos i then straight away got on with creating and editing my front cover, i used the magnetic lasso to copy and paste my images onto one page. This gave a good effect of movement through the photo. After playing around with the positioning of the 3 different poses,i then added in a bar code, which all magazines must have, i got the image for this of the Internet. After completing these two tasks i then set out to start the writing what you would find inside of the magazine, in short brief catchy sentences.
Now i will go on to add in a title and other things found on the front cover of a magazine.

Range of my front cover photos
To create these photo i used one of my fellow stundents and made sure he had dressed up in the correct clothing that would represent the music theme. i used a plain background of a blank blue wall. i think this made the person stand out more, and was more appropriate for the effect i was going to do. I made sure i had a variety of poses and frames to choose from, i then took an additional photo which i thought would be good to then take on and use for my contents page.

Influences

These two photos were found on http://www.devolutiondesigns.co.uk/devolution_gallery.html. i like the designs withing these two posters because its very broken, and interesting to look at. i think these would look very effective on the front of a drum&Bass magazine, to represent the crazy fun and disillusion found within the music scene.
The black and white one uses the black shadow of the building well. it appears plain but as you look further then the details spring out.
The other photo can be seen in different ways. at first glance you just see the buildings then as you look again you can see the intricate designs.

Example photos for my magazine cover.

These are a few photos i took when i went to a rave over the new year, i thought these photos would be very affective for my fount cover because it display the auidence and the sence of feeling you will find at a drumm and bass concert. in one of these photos i am fond of the lighting found comming from the strobe lights, i think this would be effective on the cover. If I choose not to use these photos for the front cover i can link them into the contents page and connect it to the sub-title about events for concerts ect..

Magazine Logos Found On Google
Experimental founts for my frount cover
Font logo examples found from google
The purpose of this essay is to analysis NME music magazine. I will consider how the front cover and contents page help to inform and attract the readers. NME started in 1995
Starting on the front page, NME has a brand name, using the same colouring of red with the same size placing and framing. This quality will help people to recognise NME and become familiar with the magazine. Another aspect of the front cover is the main picture, they have used a mid-shot of the band Oasis, bleeding from the page also as the photo is so large it is above the fold, representing the connotation of Oasis being such a worldwide recognised band with a huge backing of fans and success, the picture is also a call out to fans teasing the readers to want to look inside of the magazine. They also used a darken background helping to emphasise the bold red of the NME title. There is also a light breaking through from behind the heads of the band members maybe this can also be seen as a connotation of people feeling Oasis are like a God to them. Where as on other issues, they have a lot of head lines, captions and cover lines this issue includes none of them, purely stating that Oasis are so big they need to take the whole page. Needless to say that, there are a few contents found on the front cover, for instance there is a barcode found at the bottom right hand side, people will start to recognise that this in fact is in a fixed location on every issue, leading to people having knowledge of the whereabouts.

This is a drum and bass magazine called ATM, this includes music such as dupstep, Hip-Hop and breakbeat. the music is a great guide to the underground music.
I like the effect of the picture background and the way the shout is taken at a lower angle making the person appear to be larger then normal, showing a sense of powerment and a connotation of the music because drum and bass music is big and large and loud!. I also like the colour scheme and how it all ties together with the greys and whites. I think i may use this cover as a guideline in making my music magazine.

Plants attack

I liked the affect the plant made upon the wall. It makes it look very mysterious and with the correct lighting this could be a very good scene for a rock band.
I think i could use this shot for many different shots and these could be very successful. The shot is taken at eye level and is very plain and minimal.
The Graffiti wall

The tilted corner shot

This shot was taken at an angle to give a more effective and interesting shot. I thought you could place a band crouched down on the floor or stood against the wall, i think this would be effective.
I also like the different blends of colour in this shot and i think this would go well with the grime music gender.
Blue canvas

Around the school i found a blank blue wall and thought this background could be used in many ways, it could be used for any gender of a music magazine and would be good to use as a background for the front cover. the shot was minimal and was just taken at eye level. I think this shot will become very use full.
The blank brick wall
