Magazine Logos Found On Google

These Logos are insperation for my own, i want to have a brand Logo that will appear on each issue so then people will start to reconise it, these are a few examples of what i want mine to look like,

Experimental founts for my frount cover

I found a website called dafont.com where there is different types of fount where you can type in a phrase or word and it will customise it for you. this will be useful for experimenting with my title for my front page.

Font logo examples found from google

this is a example of a logo i could use for my frount cover, this could be a brand for my magazine in which every one recognises, this will give me a good basic idea.
Magazine Contents Analysis

The purpose of this essay is to analysis NME music magazine. I will consider how the front cover and contents page help to inform and attract the readers. NME started in 1995
Starting on the front page, NME has a brand name, using the same colouring of red with the same size placing and framing. This quality will help people to recognise NME and become familiar with the magazine. Another aspect of the front cover is the main picture, they have used a mid-shot of the band Oasis, bleeding from the page also as the photo is so large it is above the fold, representing the connotation of Oasis being such a worldwide recognised band with a huge backing of fans and success, the picture is also a call out to fans teasing the readers to want to look inside of the magazine. They also used a darken background helping to emphasise the bold red of the NME title. There is also a light breaking through from behind the heads of the band members maybe this can also be seen as a connotation of people feeling Oasis are like a God to them. Where as on other issues, they have a lot of head lines, captions and cover lines this issue includes none of them, purely stating that Oasis are so big they need to take the whole page. Needless to say that, there are a few contents found on the front cover, for instance there is a barcode found at the bottom right hand side, people will start to recognise that this in fact is in a fixed location on every issue, leading to people having knowledge of the whereabouts.

These are another example of the ATM drum and bass magazine. I thought these would be useful to compare to one another.
From searching through many of the front covers i have come to find that they all have one thing in common, and that's the colour theme that runs through the front covers. I think this is a very effective way and can also be seen as a sort of brand so people recognise the magazine through this.

This is a drum and bass magazine called ATM, this includes music such as dupstep, Hip-Hop and breakbeat. the music is a great guide to the underground music.

I like the effect of the picture background and the way the shout is taken at a lower angle making the person appear to be larger then normal, showing a sense of powerment and a connotation of the music because drum and bass music is big and large and loud!. I also like the colour scheme and how it all ties together with the greys and whites. I think i may use this cover as a guideline in making my music magazine.

Plants attack

I liked the affect the plant made upon the wall. It makes it look very mysterious and with the correct lighting this could be a very good scene for a rock band.

I think i could use this shot for many different shots and these could be very successful. The shot is taken at eye level and is very plain and minimal.

The Graffiti wall

I took this shout at a tilt, this gave the effect of the wall reaching away from the camera witch would b a good shot because the band member or band will appear bigger and then fade as they get further away.
The graffiti found on the wall also give this shot more texture and make it seem more interesting.
I think i could use this shot with my drum and base theme.

The tilted corner shot

This shot was taken at an angle to give a more effective and interesting shot. I thought you could place a band crouched down on the floor or stood against the wall, i think this would be effective.

I also like the different blends of colour in this shot and i think this would go well with the grime music gender.

Blue canvas

Around the school i found a blank blue wall and thought this background could be used in many ways, it could be used for any gender of a music magazine and would be good to use as a background for the front cover. the shot was minimal and was just taken at eye level. I think this shot will become very use full.

The blank brick wall

This picture was taken because i thought you could place a band or a band member in front, its plain so it would make the focus on the band bigger. There is light coming from the right hand side witch if someone was stood in front of the wall this could give off a good shadow. The photo was taken at eye level and was just a plain shot.

The dark ally

For this photograph i took it of the ally found with in my school. i thought this would be a good effect if i were to do a music magazine on rock or grime because then the place could represent the music, its a gloomy place and doesn't give out a lot of light. the picture is well framed and taken from eye level with a slight tilt. this could be used maybe on the contents page.

My Music Magazine Questionnaie

Music Magazine Questionnaire

My name is Kayleigh Gray and I am currently studying A level media. I have made this questionnaire to help me research into designing my Music magazine, and will hopefully receive some feedback witch will help me further my knowledge into what a successful music magazine should include and reach out to.
Please take the time to fill out this questionnaire about your thoughts on different aspects found on and within a magazine. It would be much appreciated.
1. Age:

2. Sex: Male/female

3. How many music magazines do you buy monthly?
1-2 3-4 5-6 6 or more……….

4. What kind of music do you listen to on a regular basis?

5. For what purpose would you buy a music magazine for?
Cover stories reviews new music releases concert information
Other………………

6. Would you like to read interviews with Bands and artists?
If yes why?

7. Would you prefer the magazine to feature mainly interviews with bands or articles on up coming bands and gigs?

8. Which current music magazine is your favourite?
And why is this?

9. What type of features do you buy magazines for?
Pictures Articles Information Advise Gossip

10. If you could have your own input, what would you like to see in a music magazine? For example the music charts listings……

This was my format for my questionnaire, i then printed 10 copy's out and gave them to a variety
of pupils found within my 6th form, the down point to me doing this was i only got a selection of information and feedback from an age group between 16-18. this meant my results were very minimal and not vary ranged.

From my feed back i did gather some use full and interesting results, out of the ten people who filled out my questionnaire i found that over half of them put down that dance and drum and bass was there more listened to music. this lead me to think i should make my music magazine on dance or drum and bass, but until i decide between the two i needed to do some more research.

I also found that the people who were buying the music magazine brought them for the interviews with bands and news within the music world.

From my questionnaires i have decided to do a drum'N'bass music magazine covering storeys and interviews from different music artists and i will include photographs, new music chart listings and information coloms. i think this type of magazine will apply to many kids of the same as group as me so would be a success, but i will still need to do some more research into the drum and bass scene.

my music magazine essay

Music Magazine Essay Writing

My essay is on an article taken from a music magazine called big Cheese, the title of the article is Mouth For War, and talks about how the southern England band started, it tells us there story of there up and downs on there journey to becoming the successful band they are today . The article was written by a man called Bruce Turnbull, wear he gathered his recourses from interviews and background information on the group. I will analyse this article by reviewing different terms and aspects of media forms and conventions. I will start by analysing the institutions.
This product was produced by Bruce Turnbull who is an independent writer and himself and his writing is not very well known, in the past he has only produced a few small pieces witch have been chosen to be used in magazines and newspapers. He has researched and analysed the group taking parts from there past and present history of being in the band and mixing this with interviews and quotes he has found from past interviews. The article appeals to a small institution because of the band not being well known and the way this article has been written and the words a formation would appeal to an older teenage group of about 19 and above. The magazine itself is not a global magazine so the article would only been seen by a small collection of people who do buy the magazine, this would only be a small range. The article itself is not to dissimilar to those found in competitors magazine such as NME and Karrang, so when writing the article Bruce Turnbull has to ensure he has a different feel and look towards things other wise not many people would be intrigued to read it.
Another form and convention is the audience of the article, as I said above the way it is written and formatted it would be aimed more to the older generation because it doesn’t use quirky humour or play on words, instead it’s very formal and informative. ‘Steve is adamant that he feels drawn towards the contrary’ this quote is taken from the text and shows the level of intelligence and use of proper language mainly used when aimed at an older group of people. Behind the text there is also a picture of the group stood over the text as if there looking down towards it this could signify that the photograph is also very plain and gloomy the connotation of this photograph shows it does not use any humour to link with the text insuring it’s aimed at the correct generation, this is a type of signifier because it something that stands for something else.
Within this magazine article there are different people being represented, first of there’s the band, these are being represented by the writer helping to promote the group and help rise awareness of them, this is done by talking about there latest songs, albums and tours. The writer makes this possible by using personality sketches and personal experiences. The writer also thinks about the different gender and races that could either be offended or this article would appeal to. They think about people’s lifestyle because this could determine weather or not people would have a long time to read the article or would prefer the article to be short and snappy, keeping it brief so they can just glimpse through it. The other person being represented by this text is the music world of pop rock, this lets people read about the significance of that kind of music and how it’s seen and represented. Rock pop has different values and meanings behind it, for instant this band Mouth for War have hidden meanings within there songs and lyrics, they say they try to put across the idea of evil and suffering that the world is forced to battle against. They hope this among there music will reach people of different ages, genders and race. The group do not come across as being a stereotypical rock band, they all started off as working class teenagers with a love for music then after taking there first gig things just arose from there. They have a very hard and protective attitude; this is shown not only by the text within the article but of the photograph. They do not have very close body language and are stood with distance between them; this could show a very self-conscious, moody attitude and this could be perceived as a stereotypical rock band. The promoter of this band hopes that the songs and role model of the band members will give of a positive influence to people, this is told though confessions. They try to show that even though this band lives the lifestyle of luxury they can still relate to us ‘regular’ people because they are just like us behind all the fame and fortune.
In my conclusion of this article all the different forms of institutions, audiences and forms of conventions all apply and work together to help promote the article making it successful in attracting its audiences. They indulge in relating to peoples everyday life, by doing this people feel they are part of the article and that the writer and producer is actually talking to them on there own level instead of waffling on in some form of a textual analysis of a band in witch no one understands so they do not bother to read it. Another good way in witch the producer of this article has made it successful is by linking the text in with a photograph of the band, they have used a very good use of connotation to help link the text to the photograph giving it more meaning instead of just looking like they have randomly stuck a photograph in for the fun of it. I believe this article has been successful in fulfilling its demands; it’s informative but at the same times not just a sheet with facts of the band on it, this both intrigues the reader as well as selling the band to them hoping maybe from this they will gain more fans or consumers.

When i received my essay back i got some very useful comments and reviews. over all i got high level 3 for my writing showing i am up in the B grade, this shows me that my writing was at a significant level and that i achieved my aims of following the mark band 3. My teacher commented on how my analysing was proficient and how i used media technology effectively when analysing text and photos. My targets for my next piece of writing will be to further references to colour connotations, values and ideologies.
